The BC Wildfire Service announced at noon today (Friday 13-May-2016) that Category 2 open fires will be prohibited in most areas of the Coastal Fire Centre's jurisdiction. This prohibition will remain in effect until 21-Oct-2016, or until the public is otherwise notified.

A 'Category 2' fire is one that is NO LARGER than 2 metres high by 3 metres wide, and/or stubble or grass burning in an area less than 0.2 hectares. Category 2 includes burning barrels.

The prohibition covers all BC Parks, Crown lands and private lands within the Coastal Fire Centre's jurisdiction, with the exception of the area known as the "Fog Zone" and the Haida Gwaii Forest District. A map of the Fog Zone is available online: NOTE: Cormorant Island is NOT in the Fog Zone so Category 2 fires are NOT permitted.

Category 1 fires (campfires less than 0.5 metres high by 0.5 metres wide) are still permitted under the ban that was announced today.
