In this 2026 General Local Election, one mayor and four councillors will be elected to office. These Council members will serve a 4-year term. The Community Charter, a piece of provincial legislation, outlines in detail the duties and responsibilities of Council members and municipal government.
As elected officials, Council members are responsible for making decisions that direct the local government at bimonthly Council meetings, which occur every 2nd and 4th Monday of each month (excluding holidays). Prior to each meeting, Council members are responsible for reading briefings and agendas to prepare. The mayor chairs council meetings, communicates with the local government on behalf of Council, and serves as a representative for the community at public events. Each Councillor is responsible for a portfolio of issues and serves as a community liaison for these topics.
To be eligible to run for Council, you must:
be 18 years of age or older on general voting day
be a Canadian citizen
have been a resident of British Columbia for at least six months immediately before filing nomination documents
not be disqualified under the Local Government Act or any other enactment from voting in an election in British Columbia or from being nominated for, being elected to or holding office, or be otherwise disqualified by law
To register as a candidate for either Mayor or Councillor, please fill out the nomination package. The nomination period begins September 1, 2026. To ensure your name appears on the ballot, you must submit a physical copy of the nomination package to the Village Office by September 11, 2026.

To be eligible to vote in this general local election (as either a resident or non-resident property elector) you must:
be 18 years of age or older on general voting day
be a Canadian citizen
have been a resident of B. C. for at least six months immediately before registering to vote
be a resident of the municipality
not be disqualified under the Local Government Act, or any other enactment from voting in local elections, or be otherwise disqualified by law
If you own property in Alert Bay, but are not a full-time resident, to vote in this general local election (along with the above requirements) you must be the registered owner of real property in the jurisdiction where you intend to vote for at least 30 days immediately before registering to vote.
NOTE: Only one person is eligible to vote as the non-resident property elector for that property when a person owns a property with one or more other individuals.
