Two Grizzly Bears are on Cormorant Island

Two grizzly bears have been spotted on Cormorant Island.

The initial siting was at Sandyville, on the southeast end, at approximately 1730 on 16-Sep-2016. The bears were observed moving northwest towards Grassy Point. A dog walker spotted the bears on a Village trail later in the evening.

BC Conservation will arrive on Saturday morning.

DO NOT APPROACH THE BEARS. We need to give them space.

Please stay off the trails and keep animals inside.

If you see the bears, please phone BC Conservation at 1-877-952-7277. Keep your distance. Give the bears space until they move on or until BC Conservation arrives on-site.

DRINKING WATER SYSTEM MAINTENANCE ADVISORY

The Corporation of the Village of Alert Bay (the Village) operates the water supply system that provides drinking water to Village residents, businesses, and visitors. Water quality in the system is monitored for bacteriological quality on a monthly basis by way of water samples obtained throughout the community, and results are reviewed by the Village and Island Health.

For decades, water quality has been acceptable; however, in June 2016 total coliform bacteria were detected in low numbers. The Village took action to correct this situation; however, samples continued to show the presence of these bacteria. In response, Island Health directed the Village to perform a disinfection of the water supply with chlorine, ensuring that the chlorine levels remained below the maximum threshold allowable for human consumption. Two subsequent rounds of monitoring indicated that the treatment was successful. Unfortunately, total coliforms have since been detected in unacceptable amounts and another disinfection is necessary. This recurrence of total coliform bacteria is not unusual as it can sometime take two or three disinfections to entirely clear them from a water supply system.

While the water is currently safe to drink, total coliforms should not be present in drinking water and need to be removed in order to prevent other bacteria from entering the water supply system that may cause a risk to human health.  As such, Island Health has directed the Village to perform another disinfection of the water system using chlorine at a low concentration that is safe to consume.

The Village will chlorinate the water supply on Friday August 26th, 2016. Water system users may notice the smell or taste of chlorine – this is normal, and the water is safe to consume. To assist in this process, the Village asks that residents draw water through their households during this time to help the chlorine come into contact with all parts of the distribution system. Turbidity (hazy water) may occur and is normal during this process.

We provide the following cautions:

• Chlorine kills fish. Residents with aquariums and fish ponds should not use chlorinated water to replenish tanks or    ponds.
• Chlorine destroys reverse osmosis (RO) membranes. Users of RO membranes should not introduce chlorinated    water to RO systems.
• Chlorine renders hemodialysis ineffective. Kidney dialysis patients should not use chlorinated water in dialysis     machines.

B.C. Wildfire Service: Campfire Ban

Effective at noon on August 17th, B.C. Wildfire Service is imposing a prohibition on campfires and Category 4 open fires throughout the Coastal Fire Centre, including Alert Bay.

The existing Category 2 open burning prohibition remains in place.

The Coastal Fire Centre is implementing the additional prohibitions due to increasing temperatures and because there is no precipitation currently forecasted for the region. This prohibition will remain in effect until October 21st or the public is otherwise notified.

Request for Proposals - Solar PV Installation

Alert Bay is a small community located on Cormorant Island, just off the northern coast of Vancouver Island. The community has taken the initiative to build multiple solar installations across the island. Five sites totaling 71 kW of solar are being proposed.

The Village of Alert Bay(the "Village") is accepting quotes for five turnkey installations including photovoltaic (PV) equipment supply for these five sites. Three 44 module PV systems are to be supplied for sites A, B and C; an 88 module system is to be supplied for site D; and a 54 module system is to be supplied for site E.

HESPV Ltd has been retained as the Village's design and review authority to be responsible for clarifying the intent and scope of this project as well as confirming that the proponent's final equipment supply will conform to the outlined specifications.

DRINKING WATER SYSTEM ADVISORY - UPDATE

The Village chlorinated the water supply system on Thursday August 4 and Friday August 5, 2016 (see the Drinking Water System Advisory issued August 3, 2016) and took samples from 13 monitoring sites on Tuesday August 9 and Wednesday August 10, 2016. Results of these samples did not show the presence of Total Coliform bacteria and were acceptable for bacteriological quality.

The chlorine that was introduced to the water supply has been flushed from the system.

Maintaining high-quality drinking water for system users is of great importance to the Village. Additional samples will be submitted next week to verify the effectiveness of the disinfection, and thereafter water quality will be monitored every two weeks in order to protect public health.

The Village is planning to chlorinate the water supply between Thursday August 4 and Friday August 5. 2015 Annual Report

The Village of Alert Bay annual municipal report includes the following:

  • the municipality's audited annual financial statements for the previous year;
  • a list of the permissive tax exemptions provided by council, and for each exemption, the amount of property tax that would have been imposed during the previous year if the exemption had not been granted;
  • a report on the municipality's services and operations for the previous year;
  • a progress report on the performance of the municipality with respect to established objectives and measures;
  • a statement of objectives and measures that will be used as the basis for determining the municipality's performance during the current year and following year; and
  • the details of any declarations of disqualification made against individual council members during the previous year.

The Village of Alert Bay 2015 Annual Report is now available for public inspection.

The report can be viewed at the municipal office at 15 Maple Road, Alert Bay BC during regular business hours Monday to Friday 9:00AM to 5:00PM. The document is available online by clicking this link.

The report includes:

FIRE BAN IN EFFECT

The BC Wildfire Service announced at noon today (Friday 13-May-2016) that Category 2 open fires will be prohibited in most areas of the Coastal Fire Centre's jurisdiction. This prohibition will remain in effect until 21-Oct-2016, or until the public is otherwise notified.

A 'Category 2' fire is one that is NO LARGER than 2 metres high by 3 metres wide, and/or stubble or grass burning in an area less than 0.2 hectares. Category 2 includes burning barrels.

The prohibition covers all BC Parks, Crown lands and private lands within the Coastal Fire Centre's jurisdiction, with the exception of the area known as the "Fog Zone" and the Haida Gwaii Forest District. A map of the Fog Zone is available online: http://bit.ly/1GMvwnU NOTE: Cormorant Island is NOT in the Fog Zone so Category 2 fires are NOT permitted.

Category 1 fires (campfires less than 0.5 metres high by 0.5 metres wide) are still permitted under the ban that was announced today.
