We have seen MANY cheque fraud attempts in the past week (January 2016) at the Alert Bay Vancity Branch.
Individuals are receiving cheques in the mail along with a letter. These are not your average fraudulent cheques: They look really legitimate. They have the individual’s full name, they have a watermark on the back, the eagle that you see is embossed in high quality Gold ink.
Please pass this on and warn anyone who may be at risk to these scams especially elders/seniors.
Please let me know if you have any questions.

Village of Alert Bay Public Works is replacing the water pump that feeds our community reservoir. The existing pump has provided us with 25 years of service so it is time for a replacement. The new pump will use less energy and has the potential to move more water.
The Public Works department requests that residents conserve water where possible during the pump installation from Monday December 7 to Wednesday December 9. The water reservoir is full so no service interruptions are anticipated.
We thank everyone for being prudent with this important resource.
On October 31st of this year the Alert Bay RCMP began an investigation into a break and enter into a residence on Cormorant Island. During the break in a number of unique items were stolen that included a full sized stuffed black bear on all fours (this bear has what appears to be a "chewed" ear), a cougar pelt with paws and head attached, as well as a 7x7 point elk head mount.
All the animal trophies were valuable to the owner in terms of the taxidermy work as well as the sentimental value. Sgt Brett SINDEN of the Alert Bay RCMP stated "Its likely that if this property is in Alert Bay, someone has seen the items and once made are aware that they arestolen property we hope they will do the right thing to help return the items to the rightful owner by contacting the police."
It's believed by the Alert Bay RCMP that this theft was targeted and the suspect(s) had planned this theft prior to entering the home. Any information regarding this theft or location of the property would be appreciated at this time.
The community is asked to please help police locate this property so it can be returned to the owner. People are asked to contact the local Detachment at 250-974-5544 or they can phone in a tip anonymously to Crimestoppers at 1800-222-TIPS. Crimestoppers offers a reward to those who help police solve crimes without asking people to go to court.
