Employment Opportunity: Receptionist/Administrative Office Clerk

As an essential member of the Village staff, the Receptionist/Administrative Office Clerk reports to the Chief Administrative Officer and Deputy Chief Administrative Officer. Responsibilities of the Village’s primary front counter representative include, but are not limited to: responding to enquiries from the public, processing accounts payable and receivable, boat harbour billing, performing bank reconciliations and assisting customers with tax and utility accounts, providing property information, etc.

This is a full-time position Monday through Friday (8:30AM – 4:30PM) and includes a competitive benefit package.

Desired qualifications include:

  • Strong customer service and organizational skills;
  • Ability to tactfully and professionally deal with various levels of government, members of the public, and fellow employees;
  • Superior oral and written communication skills;
  • ‘Power User’ of Microsoft Windows, Outlook, Word, and Excel;
  • Ability to learn and adjust to regulatory requirements quickly and apply them practically;
  • A background in bookkeeping and accounting functions will serve the candidate well; experience using accounting software an asset;
  • Work experience in the Municipal sector, is desirable; experience working within other comparable organizational frameworks will be considered.

2017 Annual Report

The Village of Alert Bay Annual Report is now available for public inspection.

The report can be viewed at the municipal office at 15 Maple Road, Alert Bay BC during regular business hours Monday to Friday 8:30AM to 4:30PM. The document is available online at alertbay.ca.

The report includes:

  • Statement of Financial Information (SOFI), including Village of Alert Bay audited 2017 annual financial statements;

  • a list of the permissive tax exemptions provided by council, and for each exemption, the amount of municipal property tax that would have been imposed during the previous year if the exemption had not been granted;

  • a report on the municipality's services and operations for the previous year;

  • a progress report on the performance of the municipality with respect to established objectives and measures;

  • a statement of objectives and measures that will be used as the basis for determining the municipality's performance during the current year and following year; and

  • the details of any declarations of disqualification made against individual council members during the previous year.

The Village of Alert Bay Council anticipates adoption of the 2017 Annual Report at the Regular Council meeting on Monday, June 25th at 5:00PM in Council Chambers. The public is invited to attend with questions relating to the report.

Employment Opportunity: Part-time/Casual Administrative Office Clerk

The Village of Alert Bay seeks a casual, on-call Administrative Office Clerk to provide support for the Village’s administrative team, including sick leave and vacation coverage. Office hours are 8:30AM – 4:30PM, Monday to Friday. The Village offers a competitive wage and benefits package.

  • Experience in municipal information systems (MuniWare, VADIM, etc.) or similar information/accounting systems (Sage, PeopleSoft, etc.) is an asset

  • A background in bookkeeping and accounting functions is an asset

  • A background in Autoplan insurance sales in an asset

  • Public sector or corporate administration, preferably in the Municipal sector is an asset.

An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.

The Village of Alert Bay is seeking an experienced Chief Administrative Officer & Chief Financial Officer

The Village of Alert Bay, located on Cormorant Island in Upper Johnstone Strait, is the gateway to the Broughton Archipelago. The Village is the oldest municipality in the Northern Vancouver Island Region and boasts a rich Pioneer and First Nations cultural heritage. The Village works closely with the ‘Namgis First Nation through the “Historic Alert Bay Accord” in the governance of and delivery of services to Cormorant Island. The 1,000 residents of Cormorant Island enjoy services including a hospital, medical and dental clinics, boat harbour, paved airport, extensive trail network, and BC Ferries service to Vancouver Island.

With many projects underway, including implementation of the joint 'Tides of Change' economic development strategy and infrastructure upgrades, the Village needs a strong leader to ensure the resiliency of the local government organization across several business lines, including: local government administration, public works, boat harbour (municipal and federal), property management, auto insurance sales, and more.

Council is seeking a candidate to work closely with and report directly to Mayor and Council. The successful candidate should bring the following to this position:

  • Several years of local government experience in a senior administrative role;
  • Strong credentials in local government finance;
  • Fluency with the Community Charter and Local Government Acts of BC;
  • Ability to develop/institute policies and regulations and provide strategic advice and direction for asset management, solid waste, drinking water, sanitary and storm sewage systems;
  • A proven ability in working proactively with councils, other governments, First Nations, the public, and business sectors;
  • The proven ability to work successfully in and foster a team environment;
  • Ability to perform in a constantly challenging work environment;
  • A demonstrated knowledge of Municipal Accounting Systems; Muniware knowledge is an asset.

The preferred candidate will possess a relevant University degree and/or certificates or diplomas relating to Local Government Administration, together with a minimum of five (5) years’ experience in a management and supervisory role in a municipal setting.

The Village of Alert Bay is looking for 1 student to assist the Harbour Attendant on a full-time basis from 3-Jul-2018 to 31-Aug-2018.

The Services to be provided are as follows:
 

·         Tracking moorage use.

·         Collecting payments from boaters.

·         Providing general information about Cormorant Island to the public.

·         Maintaining the cleanliness of the harbour facility.

·         And any other duties as assigned by the Harbour Attendant.

Summer students will typically work with and take direction from the Harbour Attendant, but may be required to work alone. In addition, the position may be also involve working at Public Works, depending on work load

Safety equipment will be provided.

Full time, 30 hours per week. Saturday/Sunday work may be required. Pay rate is $12.65 /hour.

The Village of Alert Bay is looking for 1 student to assist the Public Works crew on a full-time basis from 3-Jul-2018 to 31-Aug-2018.

The Services to be provided are as follows:

·         Assisting staff with basic roads and works maintenance operations; fill potholes, pick up debris and litter from roadsides, etc.

·         Trail maintenance.

·         Cut grass with a weed trimmer

·         Hand dig and back fill where necessary for ground work.

·         Any other work that may be assigned by the Public Works Foreman.

·         Training will be provided before any staff is asked to complete a task or operate a piece of equipment.

Summer students will typically work with an experienced full-time staff member, but may be required to work alone. Summer students will take direction from the Public Works Foreman or other full-time staff members that they are working with.

Steel-toed boots are required.

Working hours are Monday to Friday, 8AM to 4PM. Pay rate is $12.65/hour.

·         Maintains the Visitor Centre appearance inside and out, including grounds keeping
